De larven ontwikkelen zich in allelei organisch materiaal (mest,kadavers,nesten van vogels) De adulten houden zich daar dan ook meestal op en zijn ook bloembezoekers (vooral schermbloemen)

De soorten van het geslacht Carnus komen met vleugels uit de pop en gaan dan opzoek naar een nest, stoten dan hun vleugels af en hechten zich vast aan de nestjongen en voeden zich met huidschilvers (vermoedelijk ook bloedzuigend)
